ALICE BLACK is proud to present ‘RED’, the debut solo exhibition of London based painter and animator Jack Greeley-Ward (b. 1989). An immersive installation, ‘RED’ (2023) completes the trilogy ‘Primaries’ which charts the ongoing search for self as a personal battle ground with the artist making material “the voices in my head”.
In the title video piece ‘RED’, one work split across two screens and two soundscapes, a competitive choreography ensues frame to frame. The artist’s most deconstructed animation to date regurgitates the surroundings, interiors, and people of Greeley-Ward’s everyday as a continuum of interruptions. In a fight for the viewer’s attention, analogue animation techniques present a continuous pulse in one screen, whilst the other interrupts with puncturing, poetic text. In a fight for the viewer’s attention “THE SCREEN ALWAYS wins”.
The original drawings, derived from the filmic score provide their own integrated chorus. This selection of works on paper stand as powerful instantiated compositions, whilst evidencing the artists hand rendered animation techniques. Visceral white, red and black oil pastel marks pour forth exposing and obscuring, while graphite delineates and insinuates architecture and form. Collaged magazine clippings crescendo and collapse, holding the motion of several frames on one plane - a compressed segment from the film’s continuum. In the symphonic ‘I’m not sure if I want to go there’, a text snippet punctuates a palimpsest of painterly devices. Within each of these works on paper, the phycological world of ‘RED’ is materialised.
Greeley-Ward earned a BA from the University of the Arts, London (2012).
